The final judge of the book of Judges is no easy pill to swallow. We want to be wholeheartedly behind the one God uses to rescue his people, but we are unexpectedly turned-off by his selfish, carnal decisions. Born miraculously (“Yes! A good sign for God’s judge!”), marrying a foreigner (an ambiguous sign leaving us questioning, “What is going on?”), and paying of a bet by wantonly killing 30 Philistines (despicable? reprehensible?). How are we to understand this rescuer/hero/judge and how is God using him?
